Austrian-Belgian cellist Friedrich Kleinhapl has completed his studies under Philippe Muller in Paris. Intensive colaboration with Claudio Abbado, Yehudi Menuhin, Paul Tortelier and Tibor Varga.

London, Paris, Brussels, Antwerp, Berlin, Bonn, Hamburg, Copenhagen, Bologna, Milan, Triest, Warsaw, Prague, Budapest and Zagreb are only few of the cities where Friedrich Kleinhapl has performed as a solo artist and chamber musician. He’s also given concerts in the United States, Canada and Mexico, as well as performed at the Fajr Festival in Teheran.

Friedrich Kleinhapl has made a name for himself with premiere performances of works by distinguished contemporary composers. His list of interpretations includes Friedrich Gulda’s Cello Concert with Wind Orchestra and “Fantasy for Cello and Big Band” by Ed Neumeister (both recorded in 2001 for Ars® Produktion), Johannes Berauer’s Concert with Vocal Ensemble and Percussion and the Cello Concerts by Christoph Cech, Peter Herbert and Dirk D´Ase.

Friedrich Kleinhapl gave performances at the Wiener Musikverein and Konzerthaus, the Wiener Festwochen, styriarte, the Bregenz Festival, the Wiener “KlangBogen”, in the Hercules Hall in Munich, with the Wiener Concertverein under Ulf Schirmer, Karel Mark Chichon and Michael Güttler, the Munich Symphony under Heiko Mathias Förster and Prague Symphony under Aleksandar Markovi_. Last season he was invited to the Kennedy-Center in Washington, DC, the Dome des Invalides in Paris and to Gibraltar.

In 2007 Friedrich Kleinhapl appeared highly successful with the Mariinsky Orchestra under Valeri Gergiev (Concert by Dvorák), the Wiener Concertverein under Fabio Luisi on the premises of the Wiener Musikverein (Nino Rota), the Graz Philharmonic under Johannes Fritzsch (Gulda), with „recreation“ under Andres Orozco Estrada (Schostakowitsch), with the Prometheus Ensemble at the Haydn Festival Eisenstadt (Haydn) and for a recital project with internationally acclaimed opera star Christa Ludwig.

In March 2008, Friedrich Kleinhapl and Andreas Woyke have been arwarded the international „Super Sonic Award“ for their recording of Rachmaninow and Franck Sonatas.

In 2008 Friedrich Kleinhapl will tour China, give his debut with the Tchech Philharmonic under Marcello Rota and record „Songs without Words“ with Christa Ludwig.

Since 1998, Kleinhapl has been performing with the “Cello Giovanni Tononi, Bologna 1681”. This prestigious cello is on loan from the Austrian National Bank’s instrument collection.
